WHAT IT IS?

Is a daycare surgical procedure where hair from one part of body (called donor area) are removed and transplanted to anther part which is bald (recipient area).

WHY AND WHEN IT IS DONE?

  1. Male pattern type of baldness is most common reason . In this condition, with advancing age, men begin to lose hair – beginning from the temple and involving crown of head. Hair at the back of head are usually spare. Genetic and hormonal factors play a role in this. This is also called Androgenetic alopecia
  2. Loss of hair due to scar and injury like burns, accidents, traction – usually done to restore eyebrows, beard, chest hair, facial hair, scalp injury ,post surgery scar etc.
  3. Loss of head hair due to certain skin diseases

TECHNIQUES  OF HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

The procedure is done under local anesthesia. Light sedation may be given in selected cases.

HARVESTING –Hair follicles from the donor area can be harvested in two ways:

  1. STRIP HARVEST – A strip of skin containing hair , usually from the back of head, is harvested. Using magnification , individual hair follicles are harvested avoiding injury to the hair root.

Advantages – Quicker procedure , Cheaper

Disadvantages – Fine scar at back of head (which is very fine and usually covered with hair) , Stitch line takes around 2 weeks to heal.

  1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – hair naturally grows in groupings of 1 to 4 hairs called “follicular units” . In this technique, follicular units are harvested using fine punches of 0.6 to 1 mm avoiding injury to roots.

Advantages – No Incision , no stitch, Quicker healing time

Disadvantages – Time consuming, Costlier ,May need multiple sessions depending on number of hair transplanted

TRANSPLANTING – The harvested hair follicles are inserted into small puncture sites in recipient area. Micro blades or fine needles are used to create puncture sites for receiving the grafts.Placing the grafts needs proper planning regarding the density, pattern, orientation and angle to give a realistic look .

Overall the procedure is very satisfying and gives a good long term result which the reason for its worldwide popularity especially among the media professionals.

Post-operative care

For Strip harvesting technique, dressing or bandage is needed for few days .Sutures used are invisible subcutaneous and dissolvable. So no need of suture removal. Healing takes place in max 2 weeks.

For FUE technique, the recovery is quicker. There are no sutures or bandage necessary.

EXPECTATION

Shock loss – During the first ten days, some of the transplanted hairs may fall out. This is referred to as “shock loss”. It happens due to trauma of relocation. But it is temporary .After two to three months new hair will begin to grow from the transplanted follicles. The patient’s hair will grow normally, and continue to thicken through the next six to nine months.

COST

The cost of hair transplant in India is among the lowest in world. Many patients from foreign countries, both first world and developing countries, come to India. Thats because of lower cost of procedure and because of expertise of Indian surgeons.
